The dig or no-dig fight over the Pebble prospect continues as interest groups make moves by buying Alaska newspaper space and making the rounds in public forums. The most recent move comes from Northern Dynasty, which, as of yesterday, announced that the Rio Tinto company will increase its shares in Northern Dynasty by purchasing 9.4 million common shares from the Galahad company at $10 per share.

Is it too soon to judge Northern Dynasty’s Pebble Mine project?

When Sean Magee, vice president of public affairs for Northern Dynasty, spoke in Homer last month about the proposed mine, he asked for a fair hearing. Don’t form an opinion until Northern Dynasty finishes its studies, drafts its final plan and files for state and federal permits, he said.

Tuesday night, Scott Brennan, a speaker for the Renewable Resources Coalition—the main organization opposing the Pebble Mine project—challenged that position with an audience participation exercise.

Rio Tinto buys half of Galahad’s shares in Pebble deposit

London-based Galahad Gold plc has agreed to sell a 10.3% stake in Vancouver-based Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd, half its total holding to Rio Tinto Group for C$94 million (US$79.4 million). This brings Rio’s stake to almost 20% of Northern Dynasty.

Truth About Pebble was officially launched at a meeting of the Resource Development Council in Anchorage Jan. 18 with speeches by three of the new organization’s board members.

Campaigners against the Pebble copper-gold project in southwest Alaska look set to spend more money than ever in 2007, but for mining junior Northern Dynasty it will be business as usual, with work at the site scheduled to restart in early February. The Vancouver-based company hopes to bring in bigger drill rigs to delineate the Pebble East zone, which has the potential to become an underground mine adjacent to the proposed open pit.
